Cub Scouts earn Column patch after muddy hike

The Daily Astorian

"As a reward for selling more than $4,000 worth of candy, pepperoni sticks, Easter Bunnies and cookie dough," SEASIDE CUB SCOUT PACK 540 was "treated to an outing to the ASTOR COLUMN and CATHEDRAL TREE," LAURIE KAUTZ wrote to the Ear.

"... Each scout received a glider and most made it to the top of the Column to see how far their glider would fly," Laurie said. "After descending the Column, the pack grabbed their lunches and made the 1.5 mile hike to the Cathedral Tree. Along the way, they learned about some of the local plants, including bleeding heart, ferns and even nurse logs ... they thoroughly enjoyed one particularly steep muddy area of the trail. Scouts were seen sitting down, pushing off and saying 'Wheeeee!' all the way down."

"At the conclusion of the hike, each scout and leader received an Astor Column patch from the gift shop," Laurie noted. "Then they all repeatedly rolled down the grassy hill behind the Column in the hopes they would remove some of the mud they had accumulated while on their hike."

"The scouts earned more than just this outing with all their hard work on the spring fundraiser," she added. "Many earned enough to pay most, if not all, of their summer camp fees. This would not be possible without all the support they receive from the community."
